sunday funday

I don't know why that phrase always makes me think of my husband's friend, but it does.

(Husband, husband's friend, Jared)

Maybe it's because the first time I actually laughed about that expression was when he quoted it from Jared. Don't worry Jared, I concur...especially with a caesar/bloody mary in hand ;)

Maybe we should change all the other day's of the week (minus Monday) to something that rhymes with fun. Like Tuesday could be Runday (which it pretty much is for me anyways, since it's a day off school I actually do have to run!). Wednesday could be Wonday. Thursday could be Punday. Friday itself can just be Funday; because 1) you don't want to take the 'F' out of TGIF, and 2) it is fun to celebrate the weekend coming. And, Saturday could be Satunday!

Where was I when they came up with the names of days?! Oh right...not born!

My Sunday funday started with a little muffin action. As a vegan, the one thing I do miss on the odd occasion are muffins. It's highly unlikely that you can get a muffin (and by that I mean buy) anywhere made without eggs or milk. I'm fine with making them myself, but it definitely does suck when you're on campus and someone across the table from you is eating a crazy-good looking muffin, and you have nothing

I solved that 'nothing' problem and made some banana chocolate chip. Now I'll be the one making people jealous tomorrow morning. I used the recipe from the 30 Day Vegan Challenge, which provides fool-proof recipes.

Sunday funday continued with a nice outdoor run. It's been 8 days since I've ran, but I'm ok with it. I had a busy, busy week that my priorities were different and it didn't kill me to not run. I still managed to squeeze in some 12 min BodyRock's! The one non-fun thing about my run though...my watch died before my run was done.

It was my own stupid fault. I got cocky and thought 23% battery life would get through 5 miles. FYI: it doesn't!

It's now charging so I won't have that problem the next time I set out for run. Maybe I'll test the limits with 30%, but never 27% again...unless it's a little stroll!

I think I ran pretty close to 5 miles (which was my intention), but the last time I checked my watch before it died, I was at 4.39 mi and then I have no idea when it died after that. I guess it's up to my own interpretation, so this is where I can say that I ran 15 miles in 46 minutes. Alright, you might catch onto my lies, so I'll just leave it at 5 ;)

Now, I'm set out to do a workout with the hub at 1:30pm (after he's finished up with some golf lessons) and not gonna lie...just spend the rest of the day relaxing. That's my kinda Sunday funday!

QUESTION: What are YOU doing this Sunday funday?!

winter and wonderland do not mix

The 2 words I never want to hear in the same sentence: winter wonderland. In my opinion, they do not belong together. There is nothing wonderful about winter and it's definitely not a a wonderland. Whoever coined that term (apparently Felix Bernard did back in 1934...thanks a lot, Felix!), was seriously not living up in Canada enjoying the crazy strong cold winds blowing around.

To make matters worse - it was semi-warm yesterday. I just can't keep up with weather's mood swings. One minute you're tricked into thinking spring might come soon, and then the next you've turned into a hermit because you shudder just looking out the window! Someone put me on a plane to Florida asap. I don't even care right now if it means missing school...send the profs down, too!

I like to think that if I do block out that crappy outside, that it is actually nice out there...inspiration for my morning grapefruit today.

If I eat the grapefruit, then maybe I'll magically end up in Cuba or something. Oh well, it was good while it lasted. Unfortunately, when I went outside I was not only almost turned into a tumbleweed, but I was rudely awakened to how windy it actually was. Never underestimate your husband texting you saying, "it''s really windy out today!" Sometimes they do know what they're talking about ;).

The reason for the departure from my warm and cozy place, was to go workout. It's probably a good thing that I didn't just decide to stay in and eat everything in the cupboard continue doing homework, because this workout was a good one:

5 rounds for time of:
30 double under skips
20 walking lunges (using 25lb weight)
10 toes to bar (hanging from the bar, bring your toes up to touch your hands)

I successfully completed this in 16:04. The husband wasn't too far behind. The only reason I beat him by a bit was because, for some reason, I was actually doing double unders today. Any other time you catch me doing them (even just 2 in a row), I'd be there all day. I really needed them on my side today - especially since they were the ones with the highest number each round!

This workout was a bad combo (in a good way), because the more your rounds progressed, the more tired your arms got, which meant the slower they turned the skipping rope and the less double unders you accomplished. In my first round, I consecutively did 13 double unders in a row, but by round 5, it was down to like 5...thank you arms, and legs for nearly failing me!

I want to remember to bring the camera next time, so I can get some in action shots - even if they're not of me. That might actually be a better situation, because me in workout mode does not equal a pretty face! I like the idea of actually showing you where I do these torturous workouts, so you can see for yourself - plus, it's a pretty cool place (read: my husband works there, so I feel like I need to say this to make him feel special).

That's it. Now that I ventured out into the cold + wind, I'm ready to stay home now and if homework is so lucky, I might do some more of it.

Dinner plans for tonight are: portobello burgers, with sweet potatoes and green beans. I'm seriously so excited and kinda wish dinner was right now!

QUESTION: What's your Saturday agenda?

And sorry for the lack of pictures - my goal is to take a bazillion pics of tonight's din AND of tomorrow in general...stay tuned!!!

reflections from a week off

I must admit that, although I didn't go anywhere for my week off school (aka: reading week), I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I had vowed to work out everyday, and pretty much do nothing (in terms of things that required brain power). I totally held up with the latter, and surprisingly the former!

I managed to work out nine days in a row!! Before I go into details, I just want to let you know that I did not overdue it each day - I took the hard days with the easy ones.

This was a good chance to get caught up on some much needed butt-kicking and running. I love to run, but between winter (ie. dreadmill and avoiding it) and school, I haven't paid much attention to it. I knew I needed that to change soon, and when better than a week off school?!

I ended up running 15 miles total last week, but they were all torturous runs. I have this cold that began the week before my week off and it just won't go away. Worse than a cold is a lingering cold. If someone would like to come take it off my hands, I wouldn't mind. Needless to say, I was having a hard time doing 9 minute-miles, and when I tried to break the 8 marker, I had an internal battle with myself thinking it was dying!

Other than working out, I did a little reading (not!) and cooking good foods. I'm pretty much the most boring person ever...good thing I realized this halfway through the post.

Had we ventured to Florida like the original plan in my head entailed, then I would have had more exciting news, like running the Disney Princess Half Marathon 2 days ago and getting so tanned that I wouldn't need to cake-on the blush/bronzer everyday! But husbands have to work...

Now that my reflecting period is over, it's time to get back to stats assignments and squeezing in workouts when you can!

This is the workout I have planned for myself in a few hours...onset of crying may begin...NOW (mainly because I have more than 1/2 of this stats assignment to still finish)

QUESTION: Given a week off, what would you do? Please say you're more interesting than me!

thursday things

Thursday Things = random facts I feel like sharing (mainly from today, but, honestly, just whatever pops to mind). You should do some Thursday Things, too (or Friday, or Saturday) and link back.

1. I'm on day 6 of working out in a row. Why am I emphasizing this everyday? Well, as a student, some days I'm on campus for 11 hours wishing I could just be at the gym having CrossFit kick my butt. So obviously my vow to workout everyday while on break is totally sticking. Downfall: I smell everyday.

2. I ran tonight (which was less torturous than my Tuesday run...thank goodness) and I'm doing the CrossFit Open workout tomorrow. You know you want to do it, too (7 minutes to do as many burpees as you can). Tina's husband did 119. My hubby said the highest at our gym (from this morning) was 115. He was leaving work as people in the evening were doing it, so there is potential for a higher number.

3. This whole workout thing really puts a damper on having clean hair. I'm sorry hair, but there are sacrifices you have to make for the sake of staying in shape. One day you'll understand.

4. I'm making a batch and a half of cookies tonight. It's kind of like a challenge for the husband and I. We each get a baking sheet and see whose cookies turn out better (ie: mine every. single. time.)

5. I made a ridiculously good hummus yesterday. Look for that recipe here tomorrow (especially if you like artichokes).

6. Yesterday was the first time I ever made hummus. Why have I never made hummus before? Did I really just waste the last 25 years of my life not making hummus...yup.

7. Peanut butter is my drug. I buy it in bulk and it feels like I'm constantly refilling the damn thing. Yet another trip to Bulk Barn tomorrow - let's just hope they don't notice this addiction, or if they do, a discount would be nice.

8. Today felt like spring, but that was just a tease. This is what we have to look forward to overnight and tomorrow:

9. I think I'm addicted to Caffe Americano's...well done, Starbucks. (PS - for the best way to enjoy it: top with soy milk and get 2 pumps of cinnamon dolce flavouring).

10. The husband and I eat this same dish every week without ever getting sick of it...ever. Ever! One little tip: add way more veggies than the recipes asks for. Tonight's addition was: kale, broccoli, yellow pepper, brown mushrooms, onion, carrots, celery and bok choy. Like I said...I eat greens. Now it's time to match my veggie consumption in cookies...I mean, I am doing a bunch of burpees in the morning!
